3Di IOS, The Intraoral Scanner as light as a turbine

A state-of-the-art handpiece

With 3Di IOS, it's possible to perform a precise intraoral examination that's pleasant for the patient and advantageous for the dental surgery. 3Di IOS incorporates the combined experience of numerous dentists. To begin with, the ergonomics of the handpiece has been designed to adapt to a range of individual grips. In fact, the handpiece itself is the very heart of the system. One of the requisites most sought after by dentists is low weight: ideally, as light as a turbine. At just 150g, the 3Di IOS is at the apex of its category. Low handpiece weight, compactness and ergonomics, allow for seamless interaction with dental unit instrumentation. For example, the syringe can be picked up to dry the scan area without having to put back the 3Di IOS scanner.

The tip can be set in two different positions: 0° for lower arch scans and 180° for upper arch scans. The handpiece can be held in the most ergonomic position at every stage of the scan. High quality intraoral scans require that the prism of the tip remain free from fogging. Instead of traditional heating, the 3Di IOS uses a ventilation system. A small fan at the base of the handpiece draws in air, cooling the electronics. Consequently, the air arrives directly on the prism of the tip, keeping it clean and condensation-free. The tip can be washed, cold-disinfected and sterilised in an autoclave with a 4-minute 134 °C wrapped item cycle. The USB 3.0 port allows connection to both workstation and notebook.

The 3Di IOS has been designed to include latest-generation Active Stereo Imaging

This is a tried and tested technology, used in several 3D imaging applications. It ensures outstanding performance, such as high scan speed and accuracy and, what's more, the scanner requires no calibration. 3D model scans and displays are in colour, making the digital experience realistic for the patient. Diagnostic capabilities and displayed details are - thanks to colour texture - of enormous help. The various tissues (gum, dentine, enamel) and materials (amalgams, compounds, ceramic, PMMA) can be scanned with ease and without the use of de-lustre powders (useful only with highly polished metallic materials).

Complete, practical software

3Di IOS scan software is organised into the following work areas: 

  • Patient Database, which saves scan data and allows it to be re-processed at any time. 
  • Prescription, which allows users to keep track of the jobs ordered from the Dental Technician's Lab. 
  • Scan and file export. 

3Di IOS scan files can be exported in three different formats: STL, PLY and OBJ, also containing colour texture information. A.I. algorithms analyse the morphology of scanned surfaces and fill in the missing areas 'intelligently'. These areas are coloured and displayed directly on the 3D model and the operator can decide whether to add further scan data or activate the Finalisation function. Adjustment in maximum intercuspidation between the upper and lower arches can be done automatically.  Audio-visual feedback warns the operator of occlusal contact of the arches.  In any case, the 3Di IOS software also generates the separate bite file. This lets the dental technician's lab modify or recalculate the occlusion within the CAD software.  If scan dimensions extend beyond the half-arch, the software automatically enables scanning of two independent vestibular adjustments, one on the patient's right side, the other on the left. The software correction function allows for the deletion of both large areas and small imperfections; these are then corrected directly on the patient with immediate re-scanning of the area. Being able to correct the impression in real time is also useful with provisional prosthesis implants or re-scans. 3Di IOS provides a specific procedure for ScanBody scans, useful when planning on-implant rehabilitation work. After a gingival situation scan, the ScanBody is screwed onto the implant and the scan is performed, concentrating exclusively on the landmark. 3Di IOS can also be used as a camera to take intraoral photos. Taken during the scan phase, the images are saved on the patient database and can be displayed and sent to the Dental Technician's Lab together with the scan data.

Flexibility and no added costs

Scan files can be sent via generally available internet cloud services, via a lab-recommended cloud service or simply via e-mail. Small scan files means data can be sent via normal ASDL lines in a matter of seconds.  If preferred, scans can also be saved directly on a USB storage device. Dentists who choose 3Di IOS will face no additional costs as there are no license renewal or per-scan fees. 3Di IOS is covered by a 24-month warranty.
